US 501/US 221 Split Pair Intersection Improvement Project Pop-Up Event Scheduled

LYNCHBURG, Va. – On Wednesday, October 22, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. near the Petco store at 3901 Old Forest Road in the Lakeside Crossing Shopping Center, the City of Lynchburg’s project team and the City’s Economic Development and Tourism team will host a pop-up event for the US 501/US 221 Split Pair Intersection Improvement Project. This event is a continuation of the City’s ongoing efforts to engage and inform community members about this project. The rain date is Thursday, October 23, at the same time and location.
The City’s project team is excited to partner with the Economic Development and Tourism team, as they play an important role in outreach to the business community. Whether you’re just hearing about the project, or want to learn about upcoming improvements, this event is designed to bring a project update directly to you in a casual and convenient way.
There will be giveaways, child-friendly activities, and opportunities to connect with the City’s project team to discuss the progress being made on this important project. This event is perfect for:

US 501/US 221 Intersection Improvement Plan Presented at Project Information Meeting

The City of Lynchburg hosted a Project Information Meeting on the US 501/US 221 Intersection Improvements Project on July 29. More than 70 residents stopped by the open-house style meeting at Fire Station #7 and had the opportunity to speak directly with City officials and the consultant project team from McCormick Taylor Inc.
This important project, currently in the design phase, aims to significantly reduce current traffic congestion at the US 501/US 221 intersection, enhance public safety and accommodate future traffic growth due to ongoing development in the surrounding areas.
At the Project Information Meeting, citizens walked through six informational stations that displayed project mapping, a conceptual rendering of the “One-Way Pair” design, technical information (engineering, environmental, etc.), an introduction to the project website, and a public comment table for citizens to share their thoughts on the project.
The citizen comment period remains open until August 12, 2025. Comments can be submitted on the project website at www.501SplitPair.org.

REMINDER - US 501/US 221 Intersection Improvement Project Information Meeting

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The City of Lynchburg (City) would like to remind residents about the upcoming information meeting regarding the US 501/US 221 Intersection Improvement Project. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 29 at Fire Station 7, 2624 Lakeside Drive and will follow an open house format with no formal presentation. Attendees may drop in anytime between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
This project, also known as the “501/221 Split One-Way Pair,” is in partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation and aims to improve the intersection of US 501 (Lynchburg Expressway) and US 221 (Lakeside Drive) by alleviating current traffic congestion, enhancing public safety and accommodating future traffic growth due to ongoing development in the surrounding areas.
At this meeting, attendees will be able to visit various project information stations to view mapping and additional project details at their own pace. They can also have questions answered, provide feedback and meet members of the project team from the City and its consultant project team, McCormick Taylor, Inc.

Field Work Planned for the US 501/US 221 Intersection Improvement Project

LYNCHBURG, Va. – On Monday, June 30, the City of Lynchburg’s consultant project team will begin surveys and other field work along Old Forest Road, Lynchburg Expressway, Lakeside Drive, Whitehall Road, Peace Street and Chapel Lane to gather additional data for the US 501/US 221 Intersection Improvement project. This work is expected to take several weeks to complete.
Lane closures may be necessary to maintain safety. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution when traveling through the above-mentioned roads while the consultant project team members are performing this work.
Property owners in the project area will be contacted by the consultant team lead, McCormick Taylor, Inc., in advance of the start of any work on private property that may be required.

US 501/US 221 Intersection Improvement Project Moves Forward

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The City of Lynchburg has retained civil engineering firm McCormick Taylor, Inc. to complete design and construction of the US 501/US 221 intersection, a long-awaited project, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), that aims to significantly reduce current traffic congestion, enhance public safety and accommodate future traffic growth due to ongoing development in the surrounding areas.
The US 501/US 221 intersection is one of the busiest within the city, with thousands of vehicles moving through it daily. Selected for their expertise in civil and transportation engineering, design and planning, McCormick Taylor, Inc. has a proven record of successfully managing complex infrastructure projects, including those addressing traffic bottlenecks and improving safety.
On Tuesday, July 29, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., a Project Information Meeting will be held at Fire Station 7, 2624 Lakeside Drive, where representatives from McCormick Taylor, Inc. and the City will be available to provide updates about the project and answer questions from the public.
New public engagement resources also will be in place this summer to keep residents and travelers apprised of developments. A toll-free project hotline, 1.USS.501.PAIR, (1.877.501.7247) is activated for residents to get up-to-date project information and have their questions answered. To receive a timely response, callers will need to leave their name, email or US Postal Service mailing address and/or phone number.
Additionally, a dedicated project website will offer a comment form, mailing list signup for updates, meeting announcements and other relevant project information.
