Engineering Design Details
Field Crews in the Area
Field crews are working along Old Forest Road, Lynchburg Expressway, Lakeside Drive, Whitehall Road, Peace Street, and Chapel Lane to survey and investigate the area and gather additional data for the design of the project. Please exercise caution while crews are conducting this work.
Property owners in the project area will be contacted by McCormick Taylor, Inc. 30 days prior to the start of any work on private property that may become necessary.
Current Scoping Design Activities
The 501/221 Split Pair project is currently in the scoping design phase. This scoping design concept, a Split Intersection (One-Way Pair) Alternative, will convert the existing two-way traffic flow on US 501 into separate one-way northbound and one-way southbound segments. The southbound traffic will use the existing US 501 corridor, while northbound traffic will be directed onto a new alignment that will be approximately 0.51 miles in length. The new alignment is planned to begin approximately 0.25 miles south of the current US 501/US 221 intersection and end at its proposed connection to the existing Desmond T. Doss Expressway northwest of Old Forest Road. This new feature will result in two distinct intersections that are expected to carry less traffic than the original single intersection.
The new scoping design is generally built on the work completed previously with updates that also include a new bridge structure at the northern end of the project.
Right-of-Entry letters were mailed to property owners located in the project area in June 2025, ahead of project-related field work that may be necessary on private property that is scheduled to get underway in mid-July 2025.
Ongoing traffic and stormwater analysis in the project area has begun and will continue as needed for data collection purposes.
Additional current activities include:
- Review and analysis of previously developed engineering design plans
- Preliminary structural evaluation for the new bridge
- Initiate contact with utility companies
This information will be updated as the project design progresses.
Current Detours
While there are no current detours at this time, motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution along Old Forest Road, Lynchburg Expressway, Lakeside Drive, Whitehall Road, Peace Street and Chapel Lane as field crews are surveying in the area and gathering additional project data.
